The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has recently enforced a ban on indecent dressing for both students and staff, as announced by the Service Compact with All Nigerian Directorate. Prof. Patrick Egaga, the director of SERVICOM, released a statement on Friday expressing concern over the increasing occurrence of provocative and unofficial attire worn by members of the institution.

The ban specifically targets short skirts or gowns above the knee, open backs, crop tops, braless tops and gowns, spaghetti straps, sleeveless tops, handless gowns, bikinis, see-through, transparent apparels, revealing contours, bum shorts, slit skirts, body-hugging clothes, V-necks exposing breasts, tubes, strapless outfits, ragged jeans, shorts above the knee, sleeveless shirts, singlets, lingerie, sagged trousers, and more. The enforcement of the ban starts from Tuesday, May 2, 2023, and will be monitored by a combined security and administrative task force.

As part of the new policy, any student or staff member dressed inappropriately will be denied access to university facilities or face sanctions. Female students and staff are encouraged to emulate the dressing culture of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi, and her deputies, while male students and staff should follow the dressing pattern of the university’s Council Chairman, Gen. Martin Luther-Agwai (retd.), and the Registrar, Mr. Gabriel Egbe.
