The Nippon Foundation and the Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation are providing up to 30 postgraduate studentships for those students who have interested in Japanese learning.
The studentships are available for highly motivated candidates from the UK and all around the globe for the academic year 2020 to 2023.

Eligibility
- Eligible Countries: These studentships are available for the UK and international students.
- Acceptable Course or Subjects: The financial aid positions will be awarded in Japanese studies.
- Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following criteria:
- You are either a current student at another university and will attend UCL in 2020/21 as a Master’s or PhD student.
- OR you are a current student at UCL and either registered on a two-year Master’s and entering Year 2 in 2020/21 or currently registered on an MPhil/PhD program and not entering your writing-up year in 2020/21.
- You hold at least a 2:1 or overseas equivalent in your undergraduate degree.
- You are intending to study/research any aspect of Japanese studies but particularly politics, economics and international relations.
- If you are a PhD student, you must be intending to write your thesis on Japan or if you are enrolled on a Master’s program where the primary focus is on Japan, your major coursework and modules are on Japan and you are planning to write your final Master’s thesis on Japan.
- You are not already in receipt of a fully-funded position from another source. We will also consider financial need.

- How to Apply: In order to apply, you will need to complete an application form, and email this to the Student Funding Office.
- Supporting Documents: You must have to send a copy of CV and will also need to arrange for your course tutor/supervisor to complete an academic reference form and ask them to submit this by the given deadline.
- Admission Requirements: For taking admission, students are required to meet the entry requirements of the university.
- Language Requirement: Candidates whose first language is not English and who are not from a majority English-speaking country, must be able to provide recent evidence of their English language skills.
Benefits:
UCL can nominate up to three students for these studentships, which are worth £10,000 and are for a one-year duration.
