Tragedy: Two FUTA students drown while taking ‘selfie’ in canoe

Two students of the Federal University of Technology Akure, FUTA, drowned yesterday evening while reportedly taking selfie pictures on a canoe inside a river in the town. The two students who were both on the 300-level, were identified as Olabiyi Emmanuel from the Agriculture and Environmental Engineering, and Olukun Babatunde Alex from the department of Project Management Technology. President of the Students Union Government, SUG, Comrade Olaseinde Adeyinka confirmed the incident in a statement. He wrote, “With our heart full of pains, we announce the demise of two of our colleagues, OLABIYI EMMANUEL, from the department of Agricultural and Environmental Engineering, 300level, and OLOKUN BABATUNDE ALEX, from the department of Project Management Technology, 300level. “The news reached us that they are at the place for their Entrepreneurship training at the laboratory for Fishery and Aquaculture, at the back of great hall, Obakekere. “After the training, four of them decided to take a selfie on the canoe packed at the venue; during that process, the canoe which the four of them were in capsized, in which they drowned inside the water; two of them narrowly escaped because they were able to swim, while the other two found it difficult to swim, which led to their death. “Therefore, we implore you all to pay your last respect to our colleagues we lost in this disaster.”
