Stigler Center Journalists in Residence Program – Spring 2022 (Stipend of $12,000)

With the aim of shaping the next generation of leaders in business reporting, the University of Chicago Booth School of Business launched the Stigler Center’s Journalists in Residence Program in 2017. The program provides a transformative learning experience for journalists working in all forms of media around the world. Participants spend approximately 12 weeks on the Hyde Park campus, auditing classes, participating in Stigler Center events, collaborating with peers, and networking with the university’s scholars.

Benefits

The program offers exclusive seminars, opportunities to study with world-class faculty, and the chance to network with colleagues from around the world. Details include:

  • Reimbursement for economy-class airfare to/from Chicago and SEVIS and visa application fees;
  • A stipend of $12,000 to cover living expenses over the 12-week program;
  • Training in business fundamentals at Chicago Booth;
  • Participation in seminars and workshops at Chicago Booth and across the university;
  • An opportunity to write for the ProMarket publication;
  • Opportunities to collaborate with Booth faculty, students, and fellow program participants;
  • Designated study space;
  • Certificate of participation upon successful completion of program.

Eligibility

  • Open to journalists around the world who have some years of media experience;
  • They should be proficient in English;
  • Have an interest in deepening their knowledge and understanding of political economy.

Expectations

Program participants are expected to:

  • Audit three classes
  • Attend and actively participate in classes and complete all required readings and assignments
  • Participate in Stigler lectures, lunches, and social events as well as other events recommended by the center
  • Sign a letter of agreement with the center to indicate that the program guidelines and expectations are mutually agreed upon

Application

To be considered for the program, submit the following through the online application:

  • Resume/CV
  • Three published news articles
    • Submit a copy of three published news articles, preferably in English. If the articles are not in English, a translation should be submitted along with the original articles.
    • For TV or radio journalists, include links to your video/audio files in a PDF or Word document along with English transcriptions.
  • Personal essays (500 words max)
    • Describe your interest in the program and the goals you hope to achieve through the program.
    • Tell them more about your experience and interest in the field of economics and political economy and what you hope to learn in these areas.
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Proof of English proficiency (if applicable)
    • Non-native English speakers must submit proof of English proficiency (waived if your undergraduate or graduate degree was obtained in a college/university where English is the primary language of instruction or in an English-speaking country). Examples of proof of English proficiency include:
      • Certificates or standardized test scores (TOEFL, IELTS, SAT, ACT, Cambridge, Duolingo, etc.)
      • English equivalency diploma or certificate awarded by accredited national education institution
      • Work experience in an English-speaking office with letter from a manager affirming language skills
