USNews ranks Stanford University to be 5th National University in USA, and Niche ranks it to be first in USA, and Times ranks it to be third in the whole world! This is not surprising because Stanford University is a well-known university which has produced many successful alumni including Nobel Laureates, Presidents, and CEOs.

Stanford University Tuition

Stanford University’s tuition is very high for domestic and international students. Since it is a private university, it charges the same amount for both. The tuition is $48,987 per year and room and board is $15,115 per year. This is very expensive for most students even though their parents might be rich. However, Stanford University is very well-funded receiving donations from different organizations such as Google and Facebook and its successful alumni. Because of these funds, Stanford University offers both domestic and international students generous scholarships, some of them even full-tuition and fully-funded. On the Stanford University Website, it states that 70% of all students receive Stanford University scholarships to help them attend Stanford. Also, it states that about half of the students who receive need-based aid paid around $13,000 per year

Stanford University Scholarships (Undergraduate)

Stanford University offers scholarships for undergraduate students. The two types of Stanford University scholarships for undergraduate students are athletic scholarships and need-based scholarships. The maximum amount is fully-funded which means that they will cover tuition, room, and board for you to attend Stanford University.

Athletic Scholarships If you are excellent at a sport, you can apply for Stanford University athletic scholarships. Stanford Athletics states that the university has 36 varsity sports that students can participate in. There are approximately 900 students who play varsity sports in Stanford and approximately 300 athletic scholarships are available for students. So, if you are excellent at a sport, you should definitely consider receiving athletic scholarships.

Aid

Need-based aid is determined solely on the financial circumstances of the applicant’s family, and merit-based aid is determined by the applicant’s academic strength. In this page, Stanford outlines how much on average students in certain income brackets paid per year. For instance, 99% of the students whose family earned less than $65,000 a year paid an average of $4,500 a year. In the previous link, it tells you other average net cost of other income brackets as well. Also, International Stanford Scholarships Page states that international students are eligible to receive need-based financial aid. However, the need-based aid is limited, so international students would be competing for limited funds. Therefore, it will be more difficult for international students to receive Stanford scholarships than domestic students.

How to Apply (Undergraduate)

You need to fill out several documents to be eligible for Stanford University Scholarships for international students. First, you need to fill out the Common Application to apply for admissions. There are two deadlines for applications. The early action deadline is November 1st, and the regular decision deadline is January 2.

Stanford University Scholarships (Graduate)

Graduate students are also eligible to receive scholarships, sometimes even fully funded scholarships. Here, I will discuss the types of scholarships and the application process. Types of Funding
  • Grants, Scholarships, Fellowships- These are awarded by the school for student’s use. These awards do not have to be repaid by the student.
  • Loans- Students can take out a loan from the government of their origin or from organizations such as banks. These have to be repaid by the student.
  • Work Study- Students can work as teaching assistants, research assistants, residence assistants, or any jobs that Stanford University needs to be fulfilled.

1. Academic Departments The first place to research funding is your academic department.  Fellowships and scholarships in graduate schools are decentralized unlike the undergraduate scholarships where it is all centralized. You should definitely check with your academic departments first and then contact the financial aid office.

As stated before, the first stop for your scholarship should be academic departments. Academic departments award the largest amount of Stanford University scholarships, so you will need to seek scholarships from your department.
