The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Malawi welcomes applications for the 2020 Pan-Africa Youth Leadership Program.
PAYLP is designed to provide secondary school youth (ages 15-18) and adult educators the opportunity to explore themes such as entrepreneurship, civic education, youth leadership, economic development, and respect for diversity.

The mission of the programs is to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. Its goal is to serve you as quickly and efficiently as possible and request for all non-emergency services.
The U.S. Embassy promotes and supports educational and cultural exchange programs under the directive of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs’ (ECA).

Acceptable Course or Subjects: The sponsorship will be awarded in high school subjects offered by the university.
Admissible Criteria: A successful student candidate for this program will:
- Applicants must be a Malawian citizen and live in Malawi
- Candidates must be a high school student who is 15, 16, 17, or 18 years of age by the start of the exchange
- Applicants must be proficient in English
- Students attend at least one semester of high school in his/her home country following completion of the program;
- Indicate a serious interest in learning about the United States
- Applicants must be a teacher, trainer, volunteer, or community leader who works with youth
- Applicants must have a commitment to remain in teaching positions or other positions of influence on young leaders after the program
- Demonstrate strong leadership qualities and potential in his/her school or community
- Students must have a high level of academic achievement, as indicated by academic grades, awards, and teacher recommendations
- Demonstrate a commitment to community service and extracurricular activities
- Holders must have had little or no prior study or travel experience in the United States or elsewhere outside of their home country
- Applicants must be mature, responsible, independent, confident, open-minded, tolerant, thoughtful and inquisitive; and
- Holders must be willing and able to fully participate in an intensive program, community service, and active educational travel program during the exchange, as well as in follow-on activities afterward in their home countries.

- Supporting Documents: A complete application package will include the Application and Reference Forms for Adult, Application and Reference Forms for Youth, A copy of School Transcripts for all years of secondary school completed, Curriculum Vitae, Signed letter of recommendation from Teacher/Supervisor, Identification Document.
- Language Requirements: It is desirable that successful participants must have good proficiency in the English language.
- Benefits: The Department of State will cover all costs related to the program including travel, accommodation and health benefits for all participants.
