The Postgraduate School, Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) invites applications from qualified candidates for admission into its various postgraduate programmes for the 2022/2023 academic session. The postgraduate programs are available in Diploma, Masters, and Doctorate degree programs under Regular, Part-Time, and Centre for Continuing Education (Weekend) modes. Additionally, the University offers postgraduate programs in the Institute of Women, Gender and Development Studies (IWoGDS), Institute of Erosion Studies (IES), and Public Procurement Research Centre (PPRC).

FUTO Postgraduate Admission Requirements
1.0 GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENT
The following are the general entry requirements for FUTO’s postgraduate programs:
- For Engineering courses, candidates must have credit passes at ‘level in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.
- For other courses, candidates must possess five credits, including English Language, Mathematics, Biology/Agricultural Science, and two other relevant subjects at O’level.
2.0 OTHER NECESSARY INFORMATION
2.1 Postgraduate Diploma (PGD)
The following are the entry requirements for the Postgraduate Diploma program:
- All candidates must meet matriculation requirements, including O’level credit passes in English language and mathematics, and any other related subjects as required by the Department.
- Holders of HND with credit or above in its relevant areas, and professional qualifications such as ICAN, ACA, FIST, FIMT, FMILT, FNIST may also qualify for admission.
- Bachelor’s degree in the relevant discipline from FUTO or any other recognized universities with at least a third class honours.
- A good Bachelor’s Degree with at least second class honours in other related disciplines.
3.0 MASTERS: M.SC, M.ENG, M. TECH AND MPH
Candidates applying for the Master of Science (M.Sc), Master of Engineering (M.Eng), Master of Technology (M.Tech), and Master of Public Health (MPH) programs must possess any of the following, in addition to O’Level Credit Passes in English Language and Mathematics and satisfying the basic matriculation requirements of the Department/Institute:
- A Bachelor’s degree with at least a Second Class Honours (Lower Division) qualification in the related area from FUTO or from any other recognized University.
- A Bachelors degree from a recognized University plus a PGD of not less than 2.50 CGPA on a 5-point scale and a 2.50 CGPA on a 4-point scale in the relevant area.
However, for M.SC in Financial Management Technology and Management Technology, candidates must possess ‘Level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Economics, and any two subjects from Physics, Biology, Agricultural Science, and Geography.
3.1 M.SC IN OPTOMETRY
Candidates applying for the Master of Science (M.Sc) in Optometry program must possess any of the following, in addition to O’Level Credit Passes in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Physics, and Chemistry:
- A Doctor of Optometry (O.D) degree with a minimum of 2.50 CGPA on a 5-point scale or 2.00 CGPA on a 4-point scale in the related area from FUTO or from any other recognized University.
- Completion of one year internship program and NYSC program.
3.2 Ph.D IN OPTOMETRY
Candidates applying for the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Optometry program with options in Clinical Optometry, Vision Science, and Ocular Health must possess the following, in addition to O’level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Physics, and Chemistry:
- A Master of Science (M.Sc) degree from any recognized University within or outside Nigeria with a CGPA of 2.50 and above on a 4.00 scale and 3.50 and above on a 5.00 scale for options in Clinical Optometry, Vision Science, and Ocular Health, respectively.
- Completion of one year internship program and NYSC program.
- Meet other requirements of the Postgraduate School of Federal University of Technology, Owerri.
3.3 M.SC IN GENDER STUDIES
Candidates applying for the Master of Science (M.Sc) in Gender Studies program must possess any of the following:
- Higher National Diploma (HND) Upper Credit or above plus PGD in Gender Studies
- Bachelor’s Degree in the relevant discipline from FUTO or any other recognized University with at least a Third Class Honours plus a PGD in Gender Studies.
- A good Bachelor’s Degree with at least Second Class Honours in other related disciplines.
3.4 O’LEVEL REQUIREMENT FOR GENDER STUDIES
Candidates must possess O’level credit passes in English Language and Mathematics, in addition to any other three subjects as follows:
- Gender and Development Studies/Entrepreneurship (Economics, Government or History, Commerce, Geography).
- Gender and Science/Global Health (Chemistry, Biology, Physics)
- Gender and Technology (Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Agricultural Science).
- Gender and Agricultural Technology (Chemistry, Agricultural Science or Biology and Food Nutrition or Home Economics).
4.0 MPH IN PUBLIC HEALTH TECHNOLOGY
Candidates applying for the Master of Public Health (MPH) in Public Health Technology program with Options in Infections Diseases and Global Health program must possess any of the following, in addition to O’level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Physics, and Chemistry:
- A degree in Public Health (MPH) with a Minimum of 2.50 CGPA on a 5-point scale or 2.00CGPA on a 4-point scale in the related area, from FUTO or from any other recognized University.
- Completion of one-year internship program and NYSC program.
4.01 DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN PUBLIC HEALTH TECHNOLOGY
Candidates applying for the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Public Health Technology Program with Options in Infections Diseases and Global Health program must possess any of the following, in addition to O’level Credit Passes in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Physics, and Chemistry:
- A Master’s in Public Health (MPH) degree from any recognized University within or outside Nigeria with a CGPA of 2.50 and above on a 5.0 scale or 3.50 and above on a 5.0 scale.
5.0 M.Sc IN INSTITUTE OF EROSION STUDIES
Candidates applying for the Master of Science in Institute of Erosion Studies with options in Integrated Watershed Management and Urban Drainage System and Management must possess any of the following, in addition to English and Mathematics and the basic matriculation requirements of the Department:
- A first degree with at least a second class honours qualification with a minimum of 2.50 CGPA on a 5-point scale or 2.00 CGPA on a 4-point scale in the related area from FUTO or from any other recognized University.
- A Bachelor’s degree from a recognized University plus a PGD of not less than 3.50 CGPA on a 5-point scale and a 2.00 CGPA on a 4.0-point scale in the relevant area.
5.01 Ph.D IN INSTITUTE OF EROSION STUDIES
Candidates applying for the Doctor of Philosophy in Institute of Erosion Studies with options in Integrated Watershed Management and Urban Drainage System Management must possess any of the following, in addition to English and Mathematics and the basic matriculation requirements of the Department:
- A Master’s degree with a CGPA of 3.50 on a 5.00 point scale or 2.50 on a 4.0 point scale or its equivalent in the relevant areas from FUTO or any recognized University.
- Any other qualification as the University Senate may from time to time recognize/approve.
6.0 CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE IN SUSTAINABLE PROCUREMENT, ENVIRONMENTAL AND SOCIAL STANDARDS FUTO CE-SPESS) POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES
Each of the three programs Procurement Management, Environmental standards, and social standards offers the following:
- Procurement Management
- Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Procurement Management

7.0 GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
Applicants must satisfy the following basic matriculation requirements:
- Five (5) credits passes in ‘O’ level subjects including Mathematics, English, Physics, Chemistry, and one other Science subject.
7.1 POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Candidates with the following qualifications are eligible for admission provided they meet the UME requirements for admission into Electrical/Electronic Engineering undergraduate program:
- Higher National Diploma (HND) in Electrical/Electronic Engineering with at least a Lower Credit.
- B.Sc, B.Eng or B. Tech in Electrical and Electronic Engineering with at least a pass degree.
- HD in Communication Engineering (COE), Electronic and Computer Engineering (ECE), and Power System Engineering (PSE) with at least Lower Credit.
- B.Sc, B.Eng, or B. Tech in Communication Engineering, Electronic and Computer Engineering and Power System Engineering with at least a pass degree.
- Other related disciplines may be considered.
7.2 MASTER (M.ENG) DEGREE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
All applicants must satisfy the following requirements:
- Basic matriculation requirements of five (5) credit passes in five subjects including Mathematics, English and three Science subjects (Physics, Chemistry and any other Science subject).
- A Bachelor Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or other fields relevant to the program from an accredited University with a minimum of second class Honours lower-division with CGPA of not less than 2.50 on a 5-point scale or 2.00 on a 4-point scale from a recognized University.
- A Bachelors Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or other field relevant to the program from an accredited University with second class Honours lower division and a CGPA of not less than 2.50 or third class, in addition to a Post Bachelor Degree (PGD) in a relevant field of study from an accredited University.
- Any other qualifications as may be approved by the University Senate.
7.3 DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (Ph.D) DEGREE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
All applicants must satisfy the following requirements:
- Basic matriculation requirements of five (5) credit passes in five subjects including Mathematics, English and three Science subjects (Physics, Chemistry and any other Science subject).
- A Masters Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering or other relevant field of study from an accredited University with a minimum CGPA of 3.0 on a scale of 5.0 or its equivalent.
- Any other qualifications as may be approved by the University Senate.
8.0 MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION (MBA)
Candidates applying for the Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme must possess any of the following in addition to O’Level Credit Passes in English and Mathematics and satisfying the basic matriculation requirements of the Department:
- A good Honours Degree with at least a Second Class Honours (Lower Division) in the area of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Management Technology from FUTO or from any other recognized University.
- Graduates with a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized University with at least a third class qualification.
- Higher National Diploma (HND) lower credit or above plus a Postgraduate Diploma in a relevant field may apply for the MBA programme.
- A Bachelor’s degree in other fields plus a PGD in a relevant field.
However, for MBA in Financial Management Technology and Management Technology, candidates must possess O’Level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Economics, and any two subjects from Physics, Agricultural Science, and Geography.
9.0 DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (Ph.D)
Candidates applying for the Ph.D programme must possess any of the following in addition to O’Level Credit Passes in English and Mathematics and satisfying the basic matriculation requirements of the Department/Institute:
- A Master’s degree with a CGPA of 3.50 on a 5.00 point scale or 3.00 on a 4.00 point scale or its equivalent in the relevant areas from FUTO or any recognized University.
- Any other qualification as the University Senate may from time to time recognize/approve.
10.0 PGD, M. Tech/Ph.D PROGRAMMES IN BUILDING TECHNOLOGY
GENERAL ENTRY REQUIREMENT
All candidates must have five credit passes at O’level, including:
- English Language
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Chemistry
- any one from the following: geography, biology, agricultural science, economics, technical drawing, and fine/applied arts.
11.0 Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Building Technology
All candidates must meet the matriculation requirements, including five O’level credit passes in:
- English Language
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Chemistry
- any one from the following: geography, biology, agricultural science, economics, technical drawing, and fine/applied arts.
The following candidates are eligible for admission:
- Holders of HND with a minimum of Lower Credit in Building or any other related field from a recognized Polytechnic.
- First degree in Building, Quantity Surveying, Engineering or any other related discipline except (B.Ed) from a recognized University, with a minimum of Third Class Degree.
- A good Bachelor’s degree with at least Second Class Honours in other related disciplines.
11.1 M. TECH/Ph.D IN BUILDING TECHNOLOGY
The M. Tech/Ph.D programme in Building Technology is available in the following options:
- Construction Management
- Building Services
- Building and Facilities Maintenance Management
- Building Structures
11.1.1 M. TECH in Building Technology
Candidates with a good B. Tech or B.Sc (Hons) Degree in Building with at least a Second Class Lower Division or any other related discipline from a recognized university in Nigeria will be eligible for admission into the M. Tech programme, provided they meet the O’level credit requirements. Applicants with a PGD certificate in addition to their degree certificate can also apply for consideration.
11.1.2. Ph.D in Building Technology
Candidates with a good M.Sc/M. Tech Degree from a recognized university in Nigeria with at least a weighted score of 3.50 on a 5.00 scale or 3.00 on a 4.00 scale are eligible to apply for a Ph.D Programme in Building.
12.00 PGD, M. Tech/Ph.D in Urban and Religion Planning
All candidates must have five credit passes at O’Level including English Language, Mathematics, Geography and any two from the following Physics, Biology, Agricultural Science, Chemistry, Economics, Technical Drawing, and Fine/Applied Arts.
a. POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA (PGD) IN URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING
- All candidates must meet matriculation requirements, including five O’Level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Geography, and two other subjects from Physics, Biology, Agricultural Science, Chemistry, Economics, and Technical Drawing, Fine/Applied Arts.
- Holders of ND with a minimum of Lower credit in Town Planning or any other related field from a recognized Polytechnic.
- First degree in Environmental Studies, Social Sciences, Engineering, or any other related discipline (except B.Ed) from a recognized University, with a minimum of third class degree.
- A good Bachelor’s degree with at least Second Honours in other related disciplines- Geography, Sociology, etc.
13.00 MASTER OF TECHNOLOGY (M. Tech) IN URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNNING
Candidates applying for the Master of Technology (M. Tech) in Urban and Regional Planning programs must possess any of the following qualifications in addition to O’Level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Geography, and any two from Physics, Biology, Agricultural Science, Chemistry, Economics, Technical Drawing, Fine/Applied Arts and satisfying the basic matriculation requirements of the Department.
- B. Tech degree Bachelor’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning (BURP) with at least Second Class Honours (Lower Division) of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri or its equivalent from any other recognized University.
- B.Sc degree from a recognized University plus a PGD not less than 2.50 CGPA on a 5-point scale and a 2.00 CGPA on a- 4 point scale in Social Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Engineering as recognized by the Department.
14.0 DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (Ph.D) IN URBAN AND REGIONAL PLANNING
Candidates applying for the Ph.D program in Urban and Regional Planning must possess any of the following in addition to O’Level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Geography, any two from Physics, Biology, Agricultural science, Chemistry, Economics, Technical Drawing, Fine/Applied Arts, and the basic matriculation requirements of the Department.
- A Master’s degree (M. Tech, MURP on/M.sc) in Urban and Regional Planning with a CGPA of 3.50 on a 5.00 point scale or 2.80 on a 4.00 point scale in any recognized University.
- Any other qualification as the University Senate may from time to time recognize and approve.
15.0 PGD in Prosthetics and Orthotics
Candidates for the PGD must possess any of the following:
- A Bachelors degree with a third class or second class lower with CGPA of not less than 3.00 on a scale of 5.00 in Prosthetics and Orthotics
- Higher National Diploma (HND) in Prosthetics ad Orthotics and occupational therapy from a recognized institution with a minimum of lower credit grade.
- Bachelors degree in related science disciplines. Rehabilitation sciences, other medical sciences and relevant Engineering fields (B.Sc./B. Tech, B.Eng) with a minimum of a second class lower degree from a recognized University.
15.2 M.Sc in Prosthetics and Orthotics
Candidates applying for M.Sc in Prosthetics and Orthotics program with options in Clinical and Rehabilitation, Industrial and Material must satisfy the basic matriculation requirements which are five subjects credit passes at WASSCE or O’level in Mathematics, English Language, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
- A Bachelors Degree in Prosthetics and Orthotics or Biomedical Engineering Technology with at least a second class honour’s qualification with a minimum of 3.00 CGPA on 5.00 scale from any recognized and approved University.
- PGD in Prosthetics and Orthotics from FUTO or any recognized University.
15.3 Ph.D in Prosthetics and Orthotics
Candidates for Ph.D in Prosthetics and Orthotics program must possess the following:
- Master Degree in Prosthetics and Orthotics with CGPA of 3.50 and above in Prosthetics and Orthotics from FUTO or any other recognized University.
Duration of FUTO Postgraduate Programmes
- Ph.D Programmes: A minimum of six (6) semesters and a maximum of ten (10) semesters for full-time, and minimum of eight (8) semesters and a maximum of fourteen (14) semesters for part-time students.
- M.Sc, M.Eng, MPH and MBA Programmes: A minimum of three (3) semesters and a maximum of six (6) semesters for full-time, and minimum of four (4) semesters and a maximum of eight (8) semesters for part-time students
- PGD Programmes: A minimum of two (2) semesters and a maximum of four (4) semesters for full-time, and minimum of four (4) semesters and a maximum of six (6) semesters for part-time students.
- POSTGRADUATE (WEEKEND) Programmes:
- PGD Programmes: A minimum of four (4) semesters and a maximum of eight (8) semesters.
- MBA Programmes: A minimum of eight (8) semesters and a maximum of twelve (12) semesters.
How to Obtain FUTO Postgraduate Admission Form
Any interested candidate should pay a non-refundable fee of eleven thousand, three hundred naira (N11,300.00) only at any of the Deposit Money Banks (DMB) through the Remita Gateway on the Postgraduate application platform and then complete the online application.

- Step 5: Enter your email address

- Step 7: Enter your details and click on submit to generate payment invoice
- Step 8: Print your invoice containing your RRR number (Remita Retrieval Reference) and proceed to the bank for payment or make payment via ATM card.
- Step 9: Return to Step 4 above
- Step 10: Enter your email address again to complete PG Application form online. Note: Ensure that the referee’s email address supplied is valid as a referee form link would be sent to your referees for completion online.
- Step 11: Print out a copy of the Acknowledgement Slip when the form is completed. Also an acknowledgement would be sent to the email address you provided while filling the form. Therefore, make sure you provide a valid email address.

- Candidates are advised to complete the application forms online through www.futo.edu.ng as from February 6, 2023.
- Ensure that the referee’s email address supplied is valid as a referee form link would be sent to your referee for completion online.
- Please note that only valid email address and phone number are used as further correspondences will be through these channels.
