Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) are now accepting applications from suitably qualified students into their Smart Scholarship for undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students. It is a fully funded scholarship for all students. Scroll down to read in details.

SMART offers scholarships for undergraduate, master’s, students pursuing a degree in one of the 21 STEM areas, as well as doctorate students. Full tuition, annual stipends, internships, and guaranteed employment with the Department of Defense are all provided to SMART scholars.

Types of Award

Scholars enter the program as either recruitment or retention.

Recruitment Scholars

Recruitment scholars are individuals who are not working by a SMART Sponsoring Facility (SF) in permanent civilian employment at the time of the award. Recruitment scholars are those who are hired by the Sponsoring Facility in temporary or internship roles at the time of the award.

Summer internships and a period of post-graduation Employment at their allocated DoD Sponsoring Facility are required for recruitment scholars.

Smart Scholarship Retention Scholars

Retention scholars are those who are employed by the Sponsoring Facility (SF) in a permanent or renewable term civilian post at the time of the award. Retention jobs can be full-time permanent or full-time temporary. This should be noted in the Professional Experiences section of the SMART application.

During the summer months, retention scholars work with their DoD Sponsoring Facilities to arrange a return-to-work schedule. They must return to their DoD Sponsoring Facility to finish their military commitment time after graduation.

Scholars will get a copy of the SMART Scholar Handbook after being accepted into the program. These terms and conditions apply to scholars who have been given a scholarship and have accepted it.

Every year, the SMART application is open from August through December, with rewards given out the following spring.

Check the qualifications below to see whether you qualify for this once-in-a-lifetime chance:

  1. All applicants must be citizens of the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom at the time of application,
  2. 18 years old or older than August 1, 2022,
  3. Requesting at least one year of degree funding prior to graduation (which begins on the program start date), and
  4. Capable of completing at least one summer internship(multi-year scholars only)
  5. Willing to accept post-graduation employment with the DoD.
  6. A student in good standing with a 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale,Pursuing a technical undergraduate or graduate degree in one of the 21 STEM disciplines listed below.
  7. Able to produce a fall 2021 college transcript from a regionally accredited US college or university, OR be pursuing a graduate degree at a regionally accredited US college or university
  8. To be eligible for the SMART Scholarship, active duty military members must be separated or on terminal leave by August 1, 2022. Members of the Reserve and National Guard are eligible to apply. Current ROTC members who have made a commitment to serve in the military in the future may not apply.

    What you need to know about the Smart Scholarship

    Depending on the degree requirements, scholarships are provided for a minimum of one year and a maximum of five years of financing. SMART is a one-for-one commitment, with the scholar agreeing to work for the Department of Defense as a civilian employee for one year for every year of degree funding.

    Undergraduateapplicants must be enrolled in a regionally accredited institution or university in the United States.

At the end of the term, you must be able to present a college transcript from the autumn of 2021 (or earlier). They do not accept AP coursework college credit.

Applicants who have completed their studies

You can be enrolled in a regionally accredited U.S. college or university right now, or you can wait to hear if you’ve been accepted.

If you are awaiting admission, you must be accepted for the autumn 2022 semester.
