The MEXT Scholarship Program are a set of scholarships that are offered, promoted, and funded by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology under the administration of the Japanese Government, also known as the Monbukagakusho. These scholarships are given out to multiple categories of candidates. These groups of people include research students, teacher training students, undergraduate university students, Japaneses studies students, college of technology students, and special training students.

The MEXT Scholarship program usually opens its doors for future scholars during two semesters, which are April enrollment and October enrollment.. Usually, in order to apply for the MEXT Scholarship Program, there are five main procedures that you may follow. These methods include:

  1. Admission with MEXT (University Recommendation under the Special Program) Scholarship
  2. Admission with MEXT (Embassy Recommendation) Scholarship
  3. Admission with MEXT (University Recommendation, General) Scholarship
  4. Admission with JICA’s Scholarship (JDS, ABE Initiative, PEACE, JICA-FRIENDSHIP Project etc.,)
  5. Admission with candidate’s home country’s scholarship (Chinese Government Graduate Student Overseas Study Program, Indonesia government LPDP, other countries’ government scholarship)
  6. Admission with private funding for International Students

Before considering for a MEXT Scholarship, there are some things that you will need to take note of before starting out your applications. If you wish to apply for a MEXT Scholarship, you must meet one of the criteria below:

  1. The candidate must be recommended by a Japanese embassy or a consulate generale (this is also known as an Embassy Recommendation.)
  2. The candidate must be recommended by the Japanese university that you wish to enroll to (this is also known as a University Recommendation.)
  3. The candidate must be chosen by the Japanese university that you are enrolled into if you are a student that is privately financed and already pursuing an education in Japan (this is also known as Domestic Selection.)

About Yokohama National University MEXT Scholarship 2020

Currently, the Yokohama National University is providing two MEXT scholarships for their master’s degree and five MEXT scholarships for their doctoral degree – this offer will last from October 2018 enrollment until October 2020 enrollment. In addition, the Yokohama National University is also providing four MEXT scholarships for the doctoral course – this offer will last from October 2019 enrollment until October 2021 enrollment. These master’s and doctoral courses will be focusing on the on “Civil and Development” program and “Civil and ICT/IoT” program. If you plan on applying for this scholarship, you are only allowed to apply for the October enrollment.

For the Civil and Development Program, also known as the Special International Program for Urban Infrastructure Engineering in Developing Countries, the course will be focusing on outstanding students who display remarkable potential in the civil engineering field mainly from developing countries. Program Value

Eligibility

Requirements

Besides being eligible to join the program, future candidates of the MEXT Scholarship 2020 at Yokohama National University are obligated to provide several required documents. These administrative documents will not only help you secure a spot within the scholarship, but it also plays a key role in determining whether you will be suitable enough to be chosen for this scholarship – so make sure you provide your required documents well. The required documents are as mentioned:

  1. A fully-detailed and completed Application Form.
  2. For applicants of the Doctor course, an officially verified academic transcript provided by their previous university which displays the applicant’s academic performance during their undergraduate and master’s degree course.
  3. For applications of the Master course, an officially verified academic transcript provided by their previous university which displays the applicant’s academic performance during their undergraduate degree course.
  4. Official proof of the candidate’s fluency in both written and spoken English (e.g. official test score from TOEFL, IELTS, or anything equivalent.)
  5. Two Recommendation Letters that must remain confidential throughout all times. The recommendation letters must be written using the provided downloaded form. Each letter must be sealed in an envelope complete with a signature of the recommender over the flap of the envelope.

How to Apply

In order to apply for the MEXT Scholarship 2020 at Yokohama National University, there are several instructions that must be followed to ensure an efficient and effective application process. In general, the application procedure has three main selection phases – administrative selection by the program, online interview with the program staff, and a final selection conducted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT). The application procedure are as follow:

  2. Send in all documents through postal mail (e.g. Fedex, DHL) before the application closing date. Please note that the program will not accept any application documents submitted via email or fax.
  3. The program will shortlist candidates from the submitted applications. The scholarship selection criteria includes the candidate’s academic achievements, earlier degrees, research potential based on academic track records, recommendation letters, fields of interest, and an academic study plan.
  4. Shortlisted applicants will be requested for an online interview via email or Skype. The announcement from the selection phase will be given out during mid-February.
  5. The last few candidates will be obliged to fill in a more detailed application form and provide other necessary documents. The list of these last few candidates selected by the program will then be sent to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and  Technology (MEXT) for one last final approval.
  6. The final selection result will be announced to all selected candidates. After the announcement, the program will immediately start arranging the logistics for the candidates’ enrollment to Yokohama National University.
